We have the following Special Education Coach position available at the District Level
1.0 - Special Education Coach (Low Incidence) K-12
The role of the special education coach is to build teacher capacity and their understanding of instructional practices and legal issues surrounding special education K-12. They model and teach special education teachers in the areas of instructional practices, writing legally defensible IEPs, re-evaluations, progress monitoring, and parent communication. The special education coach provides peer support to teachers in standards-based instruction, assessment and reporting. The special education coach offers job embedded professional development and support to the faculty, administrators, and the special education staff K-12. A special education coach is a learner who models continuous improvement, lifelong learning, and goes above and beyond to ensure student success. Special education coaches will promote reflection, provide guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration and common issues of concern. They are responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing non-evaluative feedback to teachers.
To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary.
- Bachelor’s degree with valid PA certification in special education or related field.
- A minimum of 5 years teaching experience in special education or related pupil services field.
- Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations governing special education students and services.
- Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Demonstrates expertise in oral and written communication; specifically in regards to special education documentation.
- Proficiency in the use of technology for individual communication and research.
- Expertise in educational best practices in teaching; specifically in teaching students with varying levels of need.
- Knowledge of equity issues in current educational reform.
- Possesses effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interface diplomatically with other teachers, administrators, parents, students, support staff and outside professional contacts.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Is a point of contact as a resource and problem solver for special education teachers, parents, building principals and pupil services staff.
- Acts as a resource to teachers to facilitate adaptations and modifications to the curriculum for special education students.
- Support and model specially designed instruction according to each student’s IEP.
- Acts as a resource in the development of Specially Designed Instruction, assisting teachers in creating lessons, choosing curriculum, and designing assessments.
- Educates and models writing legally defensible IEPs and RRs.
- Supports special education teachers in identifying and/or creating assessment tools for on-going progress monitoring.
- Support teachers in ensuring cohesive instruction and delivery of services in a K-12 setting.
- Facilitates consistency of implementation across the district by providing stable and consistent support to all teachers, professional staff, and administrators involved in the implementation of the district’s special education initiatives.
- Provides job-embedded instructional support for special education teachers and professional staff including:
- In-class guided practice with specific components of the district’s special education programs;
- In-class guided practice with the integration of the components of the district’s programs;
- Demonstration of effective instructional practices;
- Other kinds of instructional assistance as requested by building and/or district administrators.
- Trains teachers in data analysis and the use of data to differentiate instruction
- Participates in building, district, regional and state-wide training opportunities for continued professional development.
- Develops and provides training to assist staff in translating research into practice at the classroom, building, and district level.
- Supports special education teachers in organizing and implementing problem solving strategies based on student data analysis.
- Mentors new teachers by regularly meeting with them to provide assistance with all areas related to special education paperwork and instruction.
- Observe & coach colleagues through non-evaluative feedback.
*Candidates who do not have their PA teaching certificate must have the College Verification of Eligibility
Letter which states that you have successfully completed the program and are eligible for certification.
Salary: PER WCAEA CONTRACT
