Head Custodian - Elementary Level

 

 

SUMMARY:

The Head Custodian is the chief person responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of the building they are assigned.  S/He is responsible for supervising all building custodial/maintenance staff. The Head Custodian provides direction for the completion of all necessary work to keep the building clean, safe, and operational.  The Head Custodian makes recommendations relative to personnel, financial matters and policy through the Supervisor of Custodial Services.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. 12 month (260-262 days)
  2. Salary and benefits in accordance with the Non-Bargaining/Confidential unit of the West Chester Area School District

 

QUALIFICATIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary.

 

 

Must be able to reach above and below the waist, walk and use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects. Requires use of both hands for repetitive motion. Able to bend, twist, kneel, stoop, climb, and crawl. Lifts/carries supplies weighing 70 pounds or more. Ability to work in an external environment subject to temperatures below 32 degrees or above 100 degrees. Able to stand or walk eighty percent (80%) of workday. Ability to work alone and with little supervision.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Directs or performs daily custodial and operational work for the school, ensuring the school is prepared for that day or the following day’s sessions, and assigning appropriate duties to his/ her staff.

 

  1. Inspects the interior building systems for proper operation, and takes the appropriate steps if a problem is identified

 

  1. Inspects building grounds, playgrounds, parking lots, signs, fencing, etc. for litter and required repairs, taking the appropriate action to resolve potential problems

 

  1. Clearing and treating walkways in inclement weather, cuts and trims lawn, assists with maintaining flower beds to ensure a safe, attractive, clean appearance.

 

  1. Performs clerical, computer and record keeping activities, such as maintaining an inventory of supplies, materials and equipment, fuel consumption, playground reports, work requests, time card totaling, and equipment requests.

 

  1. Directs or performs the maintenance duties as outlined in maintenance directives.

 

  1. Provides supervision and evaluation for custodial personnel at the site, in addition to providing feedback to peers during team cleaning.

 

  1. Respond to calls on facility emergencies from the Supervisor of Custodial Services, night supervisors, custodians, principals, security personnel, police and fire departments, and administrators during non-school hours by carrying an emergency pager.

 

  1. Regularly inspects the grounds and custodial equipment, to assure a safe, dependable operation.

 

  1. Assists, guides and trains personnel under his/her direction.

 

  1. Is responsible for setting up equipment and seating for all school programs.

 

  1. Orders the necessary supplies for cleaning and maintenance.

 

  1. Makes recommendations to improve the operation to the Supervisor of Custodial Services.

 

  1. Establishes the daily schedules and assignments for all personnel under his/her supervision.

 

  1. Supervises the performance of both day and night custodians under his/her direction and maintains a written record documenting their performance.

 

  1. Follows the established policies, procedures and guidelines to discipline employees who exhibit inappropriate conduct.

 

  1. Recommends personnel for promotion or advancement to the Supervisor of Custodial Services.

 

  1. Other related duties as assigned
